2. What is so special about your methodology? Don't all books generally help
children practise and reinforce learning?
Our methodology is what sets Harrison & York apart. Unlike typical practice books, our workbooks utilise spaced and retrieval practice methods, proven by research to greatly enhance the retention and deep understanding of material. Our unique ‘Learn, Practice, Consolidate’ approach is specifically designed to not only teach but ensure mastery of concepts in maths and English. This method thoughtfully integrates various practices with targeted consolidation exercises, boosting confidence and supporting each child’s unique educational journey.

3. What age groups are the Harrison & York integrated workbooks designed for?
What is the best time to start?
Our Harrison & York integrated workbooks are ideally designed for children aged 4-13. However, the starting point can vary based on each child’s developmental stage and readiness. For instance, a precocious three-year-old might enjoy starting with simple activities, counting and colouring in our Reception-level workbooks, while an older child in Year 9 might benefit from revisiting foundational concepts with our Y6-8 workbooks. Each child’s path can be different, and to find the best starting point for yours, we recommend using our diagnostic tool. It’s a great way to assess your child’s current level and tailor their learning experience.

4. What subjects do you offer workbooks for other than maths and English?
No, we currently specialise exclusively in Maths and English workbooks. We believe that by concentrating on these core areas, we can provide the highest quality resources and support. Mastery in literacy and numeracy forms a foundational skill set that naturally enhances understanding and performance across all other subjects. By ensuring students have strong skills in these fundamental areas, we indirectly bolster their academic success in a broad spectrum of subjects. See a comprehensive list below:
Literacy and numeracy skills are foundational skills that play a critical role in a wide range of subjects beyond just English and Math. Here’s how they contribute across different disciplines:
Literacy Skills
Literacy encompasses reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and it supports learning in nearly every subject:
1. History and Social Studies: Strong reading comprehension skills help students understand complex historical texts and documents. Writing skills are essential for crafting essays and arguments about historical events and social issues.
2. Science: Literacy skills are crucial for reading and understanding scientific texts, writing lab reports, and communicating scientific concepts clearly and effectively.
3. Language Arts: Naturally, literacy is key in language arts for reading literature, writing critically about texts, and engaging in discussions.
4. Foreign Languages: Learning a new language involves literacy skills, especially in reading and writing in that language, which are critical for fluency.
5. Art and Music: Literacy skills enhance understanding in these subjects through the ability to research, analyse, and write about artistic concepts and musical theory.
Numeracy Skills
Numeracy involves the ability to use mathematics effectively to meet the general demands of life at school, home, work, and in society:
1. Science: Numeracy is essential in science for measuring, gathering and analysing data, calculating results, and understanding scientific models and theories.
2. Technology and Engineering: Mathematics is foundational for designing, building, and maintaining technological and engineering systems.
3. Economics and Business Studies: Numeracy skills help with understanding economic models, financial calculations, budgeting, and analysing business metrics.
4. Geography: Numeracy aids in analysing geographical data, understanding scales, calculating distances, and interpreting population growth.
5. Physical Education: Basic numeracy is useful in sports and physical education for tracking scores, calculating statistics, and understanding game strategies.
Both literacy and numeracy are thus not only crucial for academic success across all subjects but also for lifelong learning and functionality in society. They enable students to navigate the world, express ideas, solve problems, and understand complex information in various contexts.
